Evolution is clearly described in esoteric literature as a process of seven stages. In the Trans-Himalayan tradition, these stages delineate the development of man, and also the development of consciousness in man. However, a broader frame of reference uses these seven concepts within the bounds of evolution as a whole. For this I draw heavily on THE REFLEXIVE UNIVERSE by Arthur Young(the inventor of the helicopter, and a mathematician).
According to this theory of evolution, its easy to see how all things evolve in the same seven stage way. Dr. Young identifies the seven stages of evolution ending with the current modern man as follows: 1:Light, 2:sub-atomic particles, 3: atomic, 4:molecular, 5:Plant, 6:animal, and 7:man. As in astrology, each of these has keywords defining the stage: 1:potential, 2:binding, 3:identity or form, 4: combination/separation, 5:growth/reproduction, 6:mobility, 7:dominion.
Each of the stages has a sub set of 7 stages using the same framework from start to finish: potential, binding, identity, combination, growth, mobility, and dominion.
And finally, Dr. Young uses a concept from Quantum physics to describe the quanta of action(please refer to Planck and Quantum physics for this) in regards to its degree of uncertainty: degrees of freedom. The greatest degrees of freedom take place at the potential stage and at the completion stage.
For example, the fourth stage(also called the Turn) is the at 0 degrees of freedom level. This is represented by determinism, classical physics and the first time combination takes place. It represents that stage where the LAWS of combination are final. The sub stages start with the basic molecular combination of metals(the metallic bond), evolve to salts(an ionic bond), to non-functional compounds(a covalent bond), to functional compounds, to non-functional polymers, to functional polymers(proteins), and finally to the final stage, dominion(shown by DNA and viruses.) In the sub stages, the functional compound is the one with 0 degrees of freedom.
Now.....why have I brought this up. Simple! Everything that is evolves. Light evolves, a planet evolves, people evolve, even theories evolve.
Astrology evolves!
Each stage of any evolution is appropriate for the entities of that stage. In physics, classical physics is appropriate and useful for the stages above the molecular, but in the three stages below it, classical physics doesn’t work. However, the physics that does work, Quantum Physics, doesn’t work in the stages above the Turn.
For some time I have perceived the immensity of the contribution of psychological astrology. However, I have had trouble with two parts of it. First of all, I don’t believe that the concepts of what I must now call classical astrology are to be thrown out with the advent of psychological astrology. Secondly, I believe that astrology is evolving and its falls within the bounds of a sequence of growth, but I couldn’t perceive a sequence that puts psychological astrology and traditional astrology within the sequence, and by doing so defines the process itself.
I can do that now.
Astrology’s evolution might be perceived as beginning with the first stage. Potential with ancient man looking up at the night sky and seeing the stars and planets and at the Sun in the day time......but thinking nothing more. At this stage there are 3 degrees of freedom; the space time of this has no length, there is no symmetry in the theory.
At Stage Two, there is some semblance of connection, but no combination or order. Man sees the stars, perhaps catalogues them. They are assigned to Gods, and names are divined for them. The spell of the image of the Sun, Stars, Planets, reigns, and hence the Illusion.
At Stage three, there is only one degree of freedom left. Astrology is beginning to become codified and an actual discipline called astrology has developed. Order has created elements, and elements that were though to be part of the whole in stage 2 are no excluded. This is early western astrology in the CE and BCE times. Many elements of combination that are seen in Stage Four are not known.
At Stage Four, astrology has developed extensive rules and determinism. This is the classical astrology of Horary. There are no degrees of freedom. There is no uncertainty in action: Follow the rules, get the result. Baroque music, classical physics fits the time. Traditional astrology is still mostly stage 4, though in the sub divisions it is moving toward Stage Five. Mundane Astrology is stage four.
At Stage Five, a dramatic change has taken place. The Turn in Stage Four has developed a new identity and the concept of a degree of freedom returns. Astrology now has uncertainty at the higher turn of the spiral. And while its the same astrology, it now now longer just deals with events and laws of action, but with persons. Persons become the center, and the person’s needs become the center. The fifth stage astrology of is the astrology of Noel Tyl, and others who perceive astrology from how it affects people's needs and desires.
Stage Six astrology transcends person centered astrology altogether in what is called Esoteric Astrology. No personal horoscopes are provided as it describes the evolution of entities above the human stage(which is stage four in another schema).
Stage Seven astrology is an astrology as yet unformed in human consciousness, and may be beyond human consciousness altogether.
AT EACH STAGE, the concepts of the previous stage fit into a whole that is wider than before. But at each stage the stage yet to come is incomprehensible until it arrives. Psychological Astrology, a Fifth Stage Astrology, can understand and use the traditional and horary astrology, as its position within the Fifth Stage evolves. But strictly within the bounds of Fifth Stage astrology, the use of such stage four terms as benefic/malefic, or the use of such techniques as secondary progressions are possible, but are not as streamlined when using the strictly Fifth Stage Technique(such as Solar Arcs). However, when dealing with the astrology of events, which is a Fourth Stage astrology subject, the use of these techniques, and phrases is wholly appropriate.
